Come and be thrilled by the music of Vaughan Williams!
Many of my pupils play in orchestras. It’s a different kind of playing to your solo and your ensemble playing, and it can be very technically demanding. Extreme came as a response to specific issues that cellists find difficult and scary. This can vary between stringed instruments.
In 2017 this new, short course came into being, inspired by the extraordinary Leonard Bernstein who said that what we all need is a plan and not enough time! So, we take a big, engrossing piece of music with a specific difficult aspect to it, practice it for a month beforehand, come together, then work like fiends and end up with a performance that confounds expectations. We all rise!
We would start on a Friday afternoon, work all day Saturday and conclude on a Sunday morning with an awe-inspiring late motet by Verdi. The musical idea to explore was dominated by its chromaticism.
In 2020 we will take another great piece of music that presents us with exciting musical and technical challenges to inspire your playing, musicality and growth. The scores are sent out a month in advance of the course.
Venue: All Saints Centre, Friars Walk, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 2LE.
Fee: £260 – lunch is provided on Saturday as are all coffees and snacks.
Please note the varied times of rehearsal. Open to cellists from Grade 6 upwards. Minimum age of 16 to infinity.
